Each month, an individual at a different ACU member institution is invited to write the introduction for this newsletter, providing an opportunity to highlight perspectives. This month, Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, Vice-Chancellor of Makerere University, Uganda writes for us about innovation in a time of crisis. Dear , As 2020 draws to a close, the higher education sector continues to grapple with the effects of COVID-19. The teaching and learning environment as we knew it has changed significantly. Whilst the migration to open distance and eLearning platforms have presented many new possibilities at an institutional level, the move online has highlighted challenges such as affordability of internet charges and poor telecommunication infrastructure for students in remote locations. As a newly elected member of the ACU Council, I champion the ACU’s strategic mission – as laid out in the 'The road to 2030' – to champion the role of higher education in solving global challenges and achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In Uganda, the COVID-19 pandemic has been a defining moment for higher education in this regard. Earlier this year, Makerere University received special and unprecedented funding worth UGX 30 Billion (USD 8.1 million) from the Government of Uganda to support high impact research and innovations that inform national development priorities. The funding could not have been timelier. In May 2020, we were able to award and mobilise short-term grants to develop innovative approaches to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. Several innovations have already come out of this funding, including: - Development of a COVID-19 convalescent plasma investigational drug
- Translation of COVID-19 prevention messages into six local languages and Braille
- Development of an automatic Touch-less Handwashing Kit (TW-20)
- Prototyping a low-cost portable medical ventilator with solar rechargeable battery backup
- Harnessing thermal imaging for detection of COVID-19
- Utilising 3D printing technology to produce biodegradable face shields
The pandemic has made us more resilient and innovative. As proud ACU members, we’re aligned with and demonstrate the ACU’s mission to build a better world through higher education. Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, Vice-Chancellor Makerere University |
