Each month, an individual at a different ACU member institution is invited to write the introduction for this newsletter, providing an opportunity to highlight perspectives. This month, Dr Sindhura Lakshmi K L, MD, from Manipal Academy of Higher Education in India, writes for us about student mobility in the times of COVID-19. Dear , The global outlook of medical education has changed significantly over the past year in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. World Health Day (7 April) is an opportune time to reflect on not only the changes in medical education but also the opportunities this period has afforded us. Around the globe, medical educators adopted online pedagogy tools and leaned on their collaborative networks to learn best practices. Alternatives for international student mobility became a necessity to expand student outlook horizons. In partnership with King’s College London in the UK, Manipal Academy of Higher Education co-designed and delivered a four-week long virtual global health elective course in a collaborative online international learning (COIL) model for students. The course focused on global health with weekly themes, including the impact of COVID on global health, infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, and maternal health care. Drawing on their experiences, clinician academics from both schools shared insights and reflections on each of these themes. The students were put in smaller mixed groups to work together and build social connections to boost intercultural understanding. Nine students from each medical school participated in this pilot virtual elective – the first of its kind in India – which was funded by an ACU Medical Student Virtual Mobility Grant awarded in March 2021. Incorporating the feedback from phase 1, the phase 2 pilot is scheduled for May 2021. Virtual electives make it possible to achieve equity in higher education without being limited by challenges such as the digital divide or travel restrictions. International collaboration plays a key role in overcoming these challenges. Let us work together to overcome the invisible walls between people by reaching out to each other.
